As explained in the application note AN501 , the atmospheric pressure change can easily be used for weather forecast. For example by determining the speed of the pressure change we can determine if sunny weather or thunderstorm is arriving. More accurate model might even determine if rain is coming or if the sky will only be overcast without rain.

Water depth is easily determined by measuring the water's pressure. As a first approximation, pressure increase of 1 bar for every 10 meters of depth. Diving computer using the MS5535 or MS5541 can accurately measure depth down to 130 meters (since the MS5535 is a 14 bar sensor).

The MS5535 or MS5541 have a typical resolution of 1.2 mbar representing a water height of 1.2 cm.

Pressure sensors find a lot of application fields inside a car, like engine monitoring, air conditioning, tire pressure and fuel tank monitoring.
The new innovative media resisitive MS7212 is idealy suited for harsh environments.

In miniature products, small size die sensor like the MS767 or the MS7812D are ideal. They fit perfectly in products like brake pressure or tire pressure control systems due to their small size and high output signal.

Altimeters

SR-applications-altibis

The easiest way to develop an altimeter is by measuring directly the atmospheric pressure (see AN501 "Using MS5534 for altimeters and barometers"). Atmospheric pressure represents in fact the weight of the air above the pressure sensor.

Since the amount of air present above the sensor decreases when the altitude increases, we can modelize the relationship between pressure and altitude.

Medical

SR-applications-medicalPressure sensors are used in a wide range of medical applications. Most popular devices are electronic blood pressure meters that use precision pressure sensors to measure the cuff pressure (0-300 mmHg) and detect the pulse. Another possible application is the sport watch displayed on your left which uses the pressure indication to determine the effort of runners (detecting, for example, if the runner goes up or down hill).

Aerospace

SR-applications-aerobisThe primary application of pressure sensor in aerospace applications is the measurement of airplanes' altitude. But pressure sensors can also be used for velocity measurement, like in Pitot tubes for example. Variometers, measuring vertical speed also use pressure rate of change to estimate climbing or falling. But pressure sensors might also be used in more complex systems, like in wind-tunnels when designing wing profiles.
